Inspire Therapy
Inspire® therapy is an innovative treatment option for people with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea who have tried CPAP but have been unable to use it successfully. The small implant works inside the body to help keep the airway open while you sleep, allowing you to breathe more naturally and rest more comfortably without a mask or hose.
Obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, occurs when the muscles of the tongue and throat relax during sleep and block the airway. When breathing is interrupted, the body briefly wakes itself to restore airflow. These repeated disruptions can prevent you from getting the deep, restorative sleep your body needs.
When left untreated, obstructive sleep apnea may contribute to serious health concerns, including high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, and chronic daytime fatigue.
WHAT TO EXPECT

Unlike CPAP, which uses a mask and hose to push air into the airway, Inspire therapy works with your natural breathing patterns. The small Inspire implant gently stimulates the nerve that controls the tongue, helping move the tongue forward and keep the airway open while you sleep. You control the therapy using a handheld remote, turning it on before bed and off when you wake up.
Inspire therapy is placed during an outpatient procedure that typically takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes. The provider makes two small incisions: one near the collarbone to position the implant and another beneath the jawline to connect the system to the nerve that controls the tongue. Most patients can return to light, non-strenuous activities within several days, although recovery experiences vary. Your provider will give you detailed instructions for caring for the treatment area and returning to your normal routine.
