Ear Tubes
Middle ear fluid can affect a child’s comfort, hearing and, in some cases, speech and language development. Ear tubes provide temporary ventilation when the eustachian tubes are not working effectively. They may be recommended when fluid persists or when recurring infections occur with middle ear fluid present at the time of evaluation.
For children with frequent ear infections or persistent fluid behind the eardrum, ear tubes are one of the most common — and most effective — pediatric ENT procedures. Ear tubes (tympanostomy tubes) are tiny cylinders placed through the eardrum to ventilate the middle ear and allow trapped fluid to drain, addressing chronic or recurrent middle ear infections and fluid buildup behind the eardrum lasting more than three months.
Performed under light general anesthesia, the surgeon creates a small opening in the eardrum, clears any trapped fluid, and places the tube — the entire procedure typically takes less than 15 minutes, and children go home the same day. Benefits include fewer ear infections and less need for antibiotics, along with improved hearing and speech development; most children are back to normal activities within a day.
