MOH’s Surgery Reconstruction
Mohs surgery (also known as Mohs micrographic surgery) is one of the most effective and precise treatments available for skin cancer, with a cure rate of 98% or greater for basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas — the two most common forms of skin cancer. At Valley ENT, our surgeons use this technique to remove cancerous tissue with the greatest possible accuracy, sparing healthy surrounding skin and minimizing scarring. Unlike standard excision, Mohs surgery allows your surgeon to examine 100% of the tissue margins in real time, so no cancer cells are left behind — and no more healthy tissue is removed than necessary. Mohs is often the recommended approach for skin cancers that are:
-Located in cosmetically or functionally sensitive areas, such as the face, ears, nose, lips, scalp, hands, or genitals
-Large, aggressive, or fast-growing
-Recurrent after previous treatment
-Poorly defined at the edges
Because the entire procedure — surgery, lab analysis, and reconstruction — happens in a single visit, Mohs offers a highly efficient, outpatient alternative to multi-stage treatment. Mohs surgery is performed in stages, all during one visit, using local anesthesia so you remain comfortable and awake throughout:
Tissue removal – Your surgeon removes a thin layer of visible cancerous tissue.
Mapping – The tissue is color-coded and mapped to preserve its exact orientation.
On-site lab analysis – The tissue is processed and examined under a microscope for any remaining cancer cells.
Additional removal, if needed – If cancer cells remain at the margins, your surgeon removes another precise layer from that exact location — and only that location.
Repeat as necessary – This cycle continues until the margins are completely clear.
Wound repair – Once clear, your surgeon closes or reconstructs the site, often the same day.
Because you wait between stages while the lab work is completed, appointments can take anywhere from a couple of hours to most of the day, depending on how many layers are needed.
What to Expect After Surgery
Most patients go home the same day. Your care team will provide detailed wound care instructions to support healing and minimize scarring. Follow-up visits allow us to monitor your recovery and ensure the best possible cosmetic and long-term outcome.
