Tinnitus Management

Tinnitus — the perception of ringing, buzzing, hissing, or other phantom sounds in the ears — affects millions of people and can range from a minor annoyance to a significant disruption of daily life. While not all cases of tinnitus can be cured, nearly every patient can benefit from treatment and management strategies that reduce its impact. At Valley ENT, our audiologists work closely with you to understand your specific symptoms and build a personalized plan to help you regain control.

You don’t have to live with it in silence — our team is here to help. Tinnitus can stem from a variety of underlying conditions, including:

-Age-related or noise-induced hearing loss

-Earwax buildup or blockages

-Meniere’s disease, which causes fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo due to fluid pressure changes in the inner ear

-Acoustic neuroma, a benign tumor affecting the nerve connecting the inner ear and brain

-Exposure to loud noise

-Certain medications

Treatment begins with a thorough evaluation to determine whether your tinnitus has an identifiable physical cause. This assessment typically includes a review of your medical history and daily habits, along with hearing tests to better understand your specific symptoms. In some cases, this evaluation reveals an underlying condition that can be directly treated — for example, Meniere’s-related tinnitus may respond to steroid injections. For most patients, however, treatment focuses on long-term management of symptoms.

Depending on your evaluation results, we may recommend one or a combination of the following approaches:

Sound Therapy & Acoustic Neuromodulation

Using broad-band noise generators or custom tone profiles, sound therapy introduces gentle, targeted sound designed to blend with — and eventually help your brain filter out — your specific tinnitus tones. Newer approaches, like acoustic neuromodulation, use ongoing hearing tests and self-reporting to fine-tune your sound profile over time.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)

TRT combines sound therapy with structured counseling to help your brain gradually change how it perceives and reacts to tinnitus. This typically includes:

-An in-depth evaluation of your history and symptoms

-Fitting of a sound-generating device worn on or in the ear

-Ongoing counseling sessions to help you learn to manage and habituate to your symptoms

Behavioral Therapy

Because tinnitus often carries emotional weight — contributing to stress, anxiety, or depression — behavioral therapy can provide valuable coping strategies to help you manage both the sound itself and its impact on your wellbeing.
